Description

The trusty cactus is popular with beginners for two reasons: it thrives on neglect and is notoriously hard to kill. Coming in a variety of shapes, sizes and flowers, no cactus plant is the same, making it a unique, decorative houseplant to add interest to your living space, whether it’s perched on your windowsill or styled on a shelf.

A cactus is perfect for novice green fingers as you only need to water moderately – in fact, it’s actually better to underwater than it is to overwater.

Although slow-growing, a cactus plant is fairly self-sustaining as it stores moisture in its roots, leaves and stems, and so largely regulates its own food intake. A cactus plant likes a light, airy and warm spot – but not too hot, around 18°C is ideal – and can cope well in direct sunlight.

Care

Watering your  cactus is important, especially during its first season in a new planting container. These cacti need to be watered infrequently, once a month or even less is optimal. Make sure you check the soil before watering, as these cacti do not like to be waterlogged or soggy. When the cactus is dormant in the winter, water it even less.

Cacti are like camels so when watering give them a lot so they can drink it all up.   Be sure to use fast-draining soil in order to avoid root rot.
